Why Stone Milled Organic Buckwheat is recognized as a Superfood and should be part of the regular diet for Children and Adults
Organic buckwheat is a highly nutritional “gluten-free” whole grain that is not part of the wheat family. So for people with celiac diseases or gluten intolerances, buckwheat flour is an awesome alternative.
Why buckwheat for adults, pregnant mothers, teens, and children?
Medical News Today says that with endless health benefits, buckwheat may improve heart health, assist in weight loss, and even help with diabetes.
Organic buckwheat is “non-gmo” and a source of healthy nutrients such as protein, fiber, and complex carbohydrates. It also contains important vitamins such as thiamin, riboflavin, and niacin, vitamin K, vitamin B-6, and folate.
Folate is one of the B-vitamins and is required to make red and white blood cells in the bone marrow, convert carbohydrates into energy, and produce DNA and RNA. ADEQUATE folate intake is extremely important during periods of rapid growth such as PREGNANCY, INFANCY, and ADOLESCENCE. (Medical News Today) The use of a Stone Mills keep temperatures down during the milling process and maintains nutrient integrity.
Our Mission
Our mantra that accompanies the Chateaubriand logo is “Nurturing Soil and Souls” and speaks clearly to our mission statement. We are still inexperienced in our field (no pun intended), so when some farming years are tougher than others, we still celebrate the fact that we are good stewards of the land by “nurturing the soil” organically.
At the same time, research has shown, and life experience has proven that the adage, “We are what we eat” is virtuous and requires a change in lifestyle and eating habits to positively influence the crucial balance of healthy body, mind, and “soul|”. Our organic products have endless nutritional benefits and all ages will experience healthy satiety that comes with being filled with healthy nutrition; something missing from a number of conventionally grown foods that are grown bigger and quicker with the aid of chemicals.
Finally, all family members who are responsible for milling and packaging our product have successfully completed the Food Handler’s Course in order to work safely in our provincially inspected premise. We are extremely proud that the Ottawa Valley has been our home, and that we are joining a group of local Organic growers to help feed “our” community safe food that we love to eat. We are thankful for the accountability that comes with organic certification, but even more thankful for the accountability that comes with providing safe and nutritional products for friends and family in your community. We look forward to your feedback. From the Briand kitchen to yours, Bon Appétit !!
Our Story
People and what they eat, truly matter to us! As concerned parents, it took us much longer than we care to admit, but we started looking at what our family was eating, where it was grown, how it was grown, and what health benefits were present if any? Along with our very good friend (a retired M.D.) and his wife, we became extremely alarmed with the ingestion of chemicals, the lack of nutrition in our foods, and the methods used to grow them; we knew we had to make some serious steps toward change.
With absolutely no experience in farming and just a little background in ecology, on June 23, 2008, my wife and I jumped into a life-changing alternative and ferocious learning curve that immediately expanded our small residential plot of a few tomato and bean plants, into a 35-acre garden/hobby farm. Upon taking ownership, we immediately took steps to become organically certified and be chemical/GMO-free! I vividly remember walking the land when we first purchased it, and within its beauty, sensing sterility when it came to forms of insect life.
After many years of challenges and support from our generous farming neighbor (aka Robin Hood), we stumbled across the incredible benefits of organic buckwheat, incorporated it into our rotation, and decided to keep it for our own consumption. After being elated by all the benefits of this superfood, we bought a small kitchen size mill and started experimenting with recipes. After almost 3 years of using friends and family as our test group, we decided to bring it to the tables of other Canadians and neighbors and purchased a small commercial-size stone mill.
We absolutely love eating pancakes and both Grandfathers who are Canadian veterans, love making them; thus the reason for the poppy on the packaging, and the name, Gramp’s Pancake/Waffle mix. The rest will soon be history! lol, After more than a decade, our family’s agricultural prowess is improving slowly. At the same time, trying to make a small organically certified farm financially viable, dealing with climate change, and respecting great soil practices continue to be a challenge. Where we have had huge success is knowing that we have been chemical/non-GMO-free on our farm since 2003 so we know without any ambiguity, what is growing on our farm, how it is being grown, and inevitably and most importantly, what we are eating. As previously mentioned, PEOPLE TRULY MATTER TO US so we look forward to sharing from our table to yours.
Our promise is that we will only sell what we are willing to eat and will do everything possible to continue to make an environmental impact by nurturing the soil, so we can make a social impact by nurturing people’s souls.
We truly hope you enjoy Gramp’s Organic Buckwheat Pancake/Waffle Mix! Wish us good fortune with hand packaging!
